Make good use of BBT (basal body temperature) to increase your chances of getting pregnant.
Utilizing BBT (Basal Body Temperature) to Increase Your Chances of Conception
1. What is Basal Body Temperature? Basal body temperature (BBT) is the body temperature measured after a long period of sleep, before any activity. It is the lowest body temperature a person experiences during the day. For women of reproductive age with normal bodily functions, their basal body temperature, like their menstrual cycle, exhibits cyclical changes. A dedicated basal body temperature thermometer is required to measure basal body temperature; using a regular thermometer will affect the accuracy of the reading.
2. How to measure basal body temperature: Place a basal body thermometer within easy reach before bed. The next morning, immediately after waking up and before any activity, place it under the tongue for 3 minutes and record the data (app recommended).
3. How to interpret basal body temperature: Measure your basal body temperature daily. After completing one cycle, connect the temperature points to form a line. A normal ovulation temperature curve typically shows a biphasic pattern of high and low temperatures (as shown in Figure 1). During ovulation, the basal body temperature rises significantly by about 0.3-0.5 degrees Celsius, generally maintaining a temperature of 36.7-37 degrees Celsius for 12-16 days (average 14 days). 4. How to Use Basal Body Temperature to Increase Fertility
Based on the principle that an egg survives for approximately 24 hours after ovulation and sperm for approximately 72 hours, most clinicians/doctors believe that the three days before, the day before, and the day after ovulation are the most fertile periods.
5. Special Basal Body Temperature Observations
Anovulatory Menstrual Cycles: Characterized by a persistently low temperature (Figure 2) or unstable temperature. When the basal body temperature chart does not show a clear high-low phase, it indicates that ovulation has not occurred.
Luteinous Insufficiency (Figure 3): A high temperature lasting less than 12 days after ovulation indicates luteinic insufficiency, making conception difficult. Even if conception occurs, implantation may be difficult due to an unfavorable uterine environment.
